Jez Moxey admits there is as much chance of Wolves selling players as signing them in the January transfer window.

The Molineux chief executive says this winter could see some peripheral players leave with a strong squad still emerging.

Darren Ward and Darren Potter, who were both transfer-listed in May and haven't started a senior game this season, could be on their way, while forgotten Denes Rosa may be allowed to leave before his contract is up in June.

"We are looking to strengthen the squad, but we are also looking to offload one or two as well if we can," said Moxey.

"But this will be purely continuing the process we have done throughout Mick's time here.

"What we did before was needed because we were building a team, but now if anything is done, it will be tinkering."Moxey admits any signings will be in the "young and hungry" bracket McCarthy has had so much success with in the last two-and-a-half years.

"We're going to try to maintain the policy if at all possible," said Moxey.

McCarthy has already admitted he wants to strengthen his wing options and is interested in Chelsea wide man Scott Sinclair and Sunderland's Carlos Edwards, whose three-month loan at Wolves was cut short after six games last month.

Wolves have done some of their best business in the winter sales under McCarthy, but have cautioned against major arrivals again.

"It might be loan or permanent signings - we're open minded, but if it's the right one, we're interested in doing business," said Moxey.

Meanwhile, with Wolves heading into the New Year seven points clear at the top of the Championship, Moxey has reminded anyone thinking they are guaranteed promotion to remember 2001-02, when they were famously overhauled by Albion having once been 11 points clear of the play-off places.

"Every time I get asked about promotion, I remind them of the 2001-02 season when we failed to go up," he said.

"No one is even talking about promotion. We're not complacent, we're just taking it one game at a time and doing our talking on the pitch."

Wolves have been linked with a move for Rangers' forward Alan Gow, who played his last game on loan for Blackpool against them on Monday.
