A rollerskating event was hosted by Shropshire Council's leisure service and saw nearly 20 children have a go at the fun sport.

The session was held at Whitchurch Civic Centre Market Hall and saw youngsters as young as six join in the fun and organisers said it was great success.

Deana Pennington, play development officer, said: "Rollerskating sessions are normally held across the county during school holiday periods and last for two hours.

"They are open to children aged between six and 12 years old and are fun and informal so they cater for those wanting to try skating for the first time and to those who have previous skating experience.

"For this session, 17 children came along to get their skates on – even one of the mums got her skates on too and had a go.

"There was a real mixture of regulars and new faces, and all children had the opportunity to skate around and take part in the games – one game which proves to be a hit is limbo!"

Ms Pennington said they had received some great feedback from the youngsters and many hope to come again.

She said: "One of the great things about skating aside from it being fun is you also directly improve the most sought after exercise goals without realising - improved aerobic fitness, strength and endurance.

"Skating is a great way for all to have fun and keep fit at the same time.

"Whitchurch Market Hall has proved an increasingly popular venue for skaters over the last few years.

"The hall size and floor surface makes it a great and ideal place for skaters. "
