Letter: Cuts will store up problems for NHS
I have received a letter from Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust. This refers to health improvement services in Telford and Wrekin district.
The letter informs me that as a result of the transfer of responsibility for some public health services to Telford and Wrekin council as part of the overall NHS restructure a number of services are going to be cut due to lack of money to fund them.
This means that along with very probably even more damaging cuts from the long list of services and programmes which will no longer be provided, the NHS fit4Men and Walk about Wrekin services are being discontinued.
I have personal experience of both these services and they have improved both my physical and mental condition and I am sure that the same can be said for many other people.
These cuts in health improvement services can only store up trouble for the NHS in future years and are extremely foolish.
The only reason for such cuts is cost. Therefore why did Telford and Wrekin Council not inform the people of the district of the rough cost in cash terms of keeping these important services intact, e.g. the additional yearly cost on council tax bands, and then let the public decide if they really wished to get rid of them.
