Strong passenger growth as two million travel through Shrewsbury Railway Station in a year

More than two million passengers travelled through Shrewsbury Railway Station in the last financial year.

It was the busiest station in the county, with 2,087,820 entries and exits, and was busier by 110,000 than the previous financial year.

The station was ranked 280th busiest in the country.

After Shrewsbury, Telford Central was the second busiest railway station with 1,207,406 entries and exits, 70,000 more than the previous financial year.

Telford Central was placed as the 463th busiest in the country.

The third busiest county station was Wellington, with 665,778 entries and exits, followed by Ludlow with 299,802 and Gobowen with 221,138.

Birmingham New Street was ranked the sixth busiest station in the country, and the busiest outside London, with 42.3 million entries and exits.

London’s Waterloo topped the list of Britain’s busiest stations with 99.4 million – the 14th consecutive year it has been the most used station.

In total, it was estimated there were more than 2.9 billion entries and exits at all 2,560 rail stations in Great Britain, an increase of 0.4 per cent on the previous year.

The figures came from the Office of Rail and Road.

There were more that 150 million entries and exits across the West Midlands, compared with 143 million in 2015/16 – a rise of 5.2 per cent.

The sixth busiest station in the county was Shifnal with 166,046 entries and exits, followed by Whitchurch with 138,246, Church Stretton with 132,352, Wem with 105,044, Craven Arms with 100,914, Albrighton with 99,380, Cosford with 84, 384 and lastly Oakengates was the least busy in the county with 59,006 entries and exits.

Nearby, Welshpool station had 170,648 entries and exits in the last financial year, Newtown had 161,722, Chirk had 71,814 and Caersws had 64,636.
