Extensive roadworks will begin next week to turn a main Telford road into a dual carriageway.

Rampart Way, which runs between the Forge Roundabout at junction five of the M54 and the A442 Hollinswood Interchange, is currently a single carriageway road and will be made dual carriageway. The work is set to start on Monday.

It is the first of two sections of road that will be made into dual carriageways to provide an improved ring road to the town centre – in a project expected to take 11 months.

The next road to be improved will be Hall Park Way which runs between the Forge Roundabout at junction five of the M54 and the Hall Park Roundabout.

High volumes of traffic already use Rampart Way to go between the A442 and the M54 and with more people and businesses set to use the surrounding roads, Telford & Wrekin Council says the area is likely to become busier.

Funding for the project has come from the Department for Transport, with the remainder financed by Section 106 contributions from new housing and commercial developments in Telford town centre

The work will be carried out by Alun Griffiths Contractor Ltd and will initially involve setting up the site compound on land next to Junction 5 of the M54 in the first week followed by work on Rampart Way itself. There will be lane restrictions in place.

Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet member for transport, said: "This is great news for the centre of Telford and reflects the ongoing investment and development that has been taking place over the past few years.

"Making the two sections of road dual carriageways will improve journey times and achieve a long-held ambition to improve the link between Telford's main north-south trunk road and the county's motorway.

"Inevitably, some disruption is unavoidable and we will be working with local businesses and stakeholders to keep this to a minimum.

"We are also conscious that the works will take place in the run up to the busy Christmas period and we will be working with Telford Shopping Centre and the contractor to ensure we keep traffic flowing."

Work on Rampart Way is expected to be completed in April 2017, with work on Hall Park Way due to start immediately afterwards. Hall Park Way is expected to be finished by September 2017.
