Snapchat users in the UK can now design, place and buy personalised versions of the geofilters that appear within the picture messaging app, directly from their phone.

Until now, custom geofilters had only been available to users in the UK when created on a desktop computer.

The filters can be created to mark special occasions such as a birthday or wedding as well as other personal events.

Snapchat will review all geofilter designs submitted for approval, which the firm says can take up to 24 hours.

“Geofilters can be placed to cover an area the size of a house up to 100 football pitches and made visible for a couple of hours up to a few days. Pricing starts at £5.99.”

Snapchat said the pricing of the filters would depend on the size of area selected to cover and length of time wanted.

The app has responded with a series of updates of its own, as well as its first hardware product – video enabled glasses known as Spectacles – launched by parent company Snap Inc.

Snapchat has more than 173 million daily active users, including 10 million in the UK, and the firm says more than one billion snaps with geofilters are viewed worldwide every day.
