A landmark former school building in Shrewsbury has been sold for more than £1 million ahead of work to transform it into luxury flats.

Contracts were exchanged this week on one of the buildings that housed the former Shrewsbury Junior Girls High School in Kennedy Road.

The property is now owned by Shropshire Homes, which submitted a planning application this year to Shropshire Council showing its intention to turn the building into luxury flats.

Selling agents Carter Jonas said the building in the Kingsland has now been sold for a 'seven-figure sum' close to the asking price of £1.2 million.

Victoria Lawder, who handled the sale for Carter Jonas, said: "This is one of the finest Victorian buildings to have come onto the market in Shrewsbury for many years.

"Kennedy Road is one of the most affluent urban streets in Shropshire and this property occupies a fantastic position on the road with superb views over the Kingsland Valley towards Belle Vue."

The three-storey property was built in 1885 and school had been based there since 1959.

The building went on the market in autumn 2011 after the High School's pre-preparatory and nursery department moved to Kingsland Grange.

The next-door building, 35 Kennedy Road, which also housed part of the school, is still up for sale with an asking price of £895,000.

Shropshire Homes is hoping to turn the newly purchased building into six apartments.

The application is also looking to put two homes in the grounds of the property.

But the current plans are being opposed by the Shrewsbury Civic Society.

Steven McLeish, from the society, said last month that using the building for flats would be a 'relatively positive use', but the society was concerned about the designs for the new homes.

"Overall, we feel these two designs need much more consideration and are currently unsuitable in what is a significant area," he said.
