200 sign petition against Highley homes plan
More than 200 signatures have been collected on a petition opposing plans to build nearly 60 homes in a village in Shropshire.
People in Highley, near Bridgnorth, want to block plans to build up to 58 homes, allotments and parking spaces off Jubilee Drive.
They claim the site is not suitable for such a development and that there is no need for so many properties to be built in the village.
The petition, which has been signed by 209 villagers, was submitted to Shropshire Council yesterday.
It comes ahead of a special planning meeting on Monday called by members of Highley Parish Council to discuss the development.
The plans have been drawn up by developers Taylor Wimpey, which claims a number of the homes will be affordable and that the development will support local shops and services.
Gay Barker, who circulated the petition, along with Shropshire councillor Mary Nicholls, said: "The petition was e-mailed to Shropshire Council for Wednesday's deadline. I can't say yet whether we will be continuing to collect signatures now because we have not yet heard whether or not we have an extension to continue.
"The petition has already been posted on the council's website. The number of signatures received so far is 209, most of whom live in Ashleigh Gardens." Residents also claim the site has not been included in Shropshire Council's SAMDev preferred option consultation or Highley's place or parish plans.
A spokesman for Taylor Wimpey said 13 per cent of the 58 homes will be affordable and added the homes would cater for families, couples and people living on their own.
Monday's planning event will be held at the Severn Centre from 11am, where members of the public will be able to see the plans in more detail.
