The authority received the award on Monday, with neighbouring Telford & Wrekin Council being given £79,132.

The money has come from the government's Rough Sleeping Initiative.

Councillor Lee Chapman, Shropshire Council's cabinet member for adult social care, health and housing said the funding would be helpful in the bid to end rough sleeping in the county.

He said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this funding, especially in light of the increase in the rough sleeper numbers we are seeing in the county. This is the first time Shropshire has received any formal rough sleeper funding so we welcome the recognition from central government of the need for support.

“I would like to thank all those involved you work tirelessly to support rough sleepers and made it possible for us to receive this additional money.

“This funding will help support Shropshire Council housing services commitment to ending rough sleeping within the county. While it is recognized that this is not a simple task, it will enable us to continue to explore housing initiatives and provide support to meet the needs and complexities of those sleeping rough.”

Laura Fisher, housing services manager added: “We are very excited to have received this funding. Rough sleeping can have a significant impact on someone’s physical and mental health.

"This additional money will help us invest in additional resources to improve the outcomes for those unfortunate enough to find themselves homeless.”
