Twenty children’s centres closed in Shropshire

Twenty children's centres across the county have now closed after Shropshire Council approved a new model.

A report before the council in September recommended the withdrawal of early years services at 20 buildings, to be replaced by seven hubs in larger towns.

The centres, based in community centres, schools and churches, held stay and play sessions, craft activities and sing-a-longs and offered parents support and advice.

It means staff will be split between new units or be asked to go out into the community to support parents and children with information, advice and support.

The new hubs will be in Oswestry, Ludlow, Whitchurch, Bridgnorth, Market Drayton and two in Shrewsbury.

The proposal has been subject to two, six-week public consultations.

The first, launched in February, saw 459 people take part, while the second in May drew comments from 461 people.

The centres closing include Shrewsbury's Richmond House and Buttercup Lodge, Holy Trinity in Oswestry and St Andrew's Primary School in Shifnal.
