Five out of the nine council cabinet members have announced they will not be standing in next month’s elections, including the leader and two deputy leaders – Councillors Barry Thomas, Wynne Jones and Graham Brown.

Councillor John Brunt, cabinet member for highways, and Councillor Tony Thomas, cabinet member for regeneration, have also confirmed they will not be standing for re-election.

In total across Powys, 23 current councillors have confirmed they will not be standing in May.

Once the nominations closed on Tuesday, it was clear battles would be held in 56 of the county council’s 73 wards, with 16 uncontested with candidates already returned unopposed.
