Milk tanker made a white mess

John Hamer was quickly on the scene with his camera to capture this incident from over 60 years ago near his then home in Pontesford.

Mr Hamer, who now lives in Shrewsbury, says: "This is an old photo taken by me in the early 1950s at the then notorious blackspot of Pontesford Bridge on the A488 out of Shrewsbury.

"The photo shows milk oozing from the rear of a milk tanker heading for Minsterley Creamery. From memory I think it was a following tanker that did the damage.

"On this occasion no-one was hurt, but as my family lived just a few yards away we were often alerted to bumps and scrapes.

"Sadly, at least two were fatalities. But on one more light-hearted occasion a student motorcyclist from Wolverhampton College travelling back home came over the bridge and faced with a swing left for Shrewsbury or a swing right for the village of Plealey chose a closed five bar gate between the two into a muddy field.

"Fortunately he was badly shaken but not seriously hurt. He spent a couple of hours in our home nearby and after we adjusted a somewhat out of shape motorcycle and eventually recovering his now muddy glasses from the field we sent him on his way.

"I hope he made it home. I wonder if he is still alive and if he reads the Shropshire Star?"

Well, if he does, and he is reading this, we would love to hear from that motorcyclist.
