Skoda reveals Kamiq name for new Europe-bound crossover
Kamiq is already present in Skoda’s China line-up — but now the nameplate will grace a new model on this continent
An all-new, upcoming crossover from Skoda will be named Kamiq, the firm has revealed.
Though the Kamiq name is already used in China on a small SUV, the European-bound model is set to be a different machine from the one sold in Skoda’s largest market. It will slot in underneath the Karoq as the entry-level SUV in Skoda’s European line-up.
Little else is known about the car at the moment — with a reveal set for the Geneva Motor Show in March — but the Czech firm did release a teaser image of the Kamiq last week. That picture showed slim LED headlights and a compact silhouette.
It’s reasonable to expect that the Kamiq will share many of its components with the other compact SUVs in the Volkswagen Group – the VW T-Roc and the Seat Arona. That would mean using the MQB platform and access to a range of three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
Other than that, Skoda has said the car will debut new assistance tech and also take advantage of the firm’s ‘Simply Clever’ features — such as the Skoda Fabia’s filler cap-stored ice scraper and Karoq’s bin bags in the doors.
The Chinese-market Kamiq also serves as the entry-level model in a four-strong SUV line-up, after Skoda revealed that China would exclusively receive the Kodiaq GT — a coupe-like version of the firm’s largest offering. Demand in China for the GT has reportedly been strong, resulting in growing rumours of a worldwide rollout of the model, although Skoda has not confirmed this.
