Audi’s popular A4 saloon and Avant estate models have been given a mild facelift for 2018, in order to keep the compact executive car fighting against an updated Mercedes C-Class and all-new BMW 3 Series set to be revealed at October’s Paris Motor Show.

Unlike its heavily revised rivals, though, changes to the A4 are purely cosmetic.

Audi has sharpened up the bumper design front and rear, with new U-shaped contours surrounding the air intakes. S line models become seriously sporty-looking, with a bold frontal design and RS4-aping lip at the bottom of the bumper.

The ‘Singleframe’ grille is still present and correct, and retains horizontal slats rather than a honeycomb design to differentiate it from its performance-oriented cousins.

At the rear, there’s a smaller diffuser plus new squared-off exhaust surrounds, replacing the oval units on the previous model.

New alloy wheel designs are available, in sizes ranging from 16- to 19-inches.

Audi has also revealed an even sportier S-line variant, named the competition equipment package. It increases the size of the bootlid spoiler, adds an even sportier bodykit and unique 19-inch alloy wheels. It won’t be offered to the UK market, however.

The updated Audi A4 will arrive in the autumn. Expect pricing to be broadly similar to the outgoing model.
