A walking treasure hunt in Newport, complete with a meal and quiz afterwards, has contributed around £1,600 to an appeal being run by the League of Friends to the Cottage Care Centre.

The overall effort, which is looking to reach £150,000 to update the X-ray machine at the Cottage Care Centre in the town, is estimated to have reached between £50,000 and £60,000.

Sunday's event was organised Yvonne Gough of Newport's badminton club and saw groups of people tasked with going around the town trying to find landmarks from clues as part of the treasure hunt.

More than 150 people took part in the event, before enjoying food and a quiz at the Royal British Legion afterwards.

Dr Nick Tindall, a member of the league of friends, said they were thrilled at the efforts of the organisers and participants.

He said: "I think it has been a great idea to organise the event at this time of year, between Christmas and New Year because there is not always that much going on and the enthusiasm for this has been fantastic."

Dr Tindall said that upgrades to X-ray equipment at Princess Royal Hospital and Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, both run by Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, needed to be matched by the Cottage Care Centre to ensure its equipment could still be used.

He added that they were thrilled with the amount raised by the campaign so far, and at the efforts of those who have organised a host of fundraising events.

He said: "This event today, that is one per cent of the total, so just in one event we have done one per cent and that is fantastic, and I love the idea that it is the whole community taking part and raising the money."

He added: "A big thank you for all the people who have organised the events and those who turn out to them."
