Horsehay Post Office will close next month.

Horsehay Post Office and Walker's News and Village Stores, in which it is based, will close on Saturday, June 5.

The building has been sold by its owners and will no longer operate as a newsagents or post office.

A spokesman for the Post Office said they would be looking to find an alternative site for the service.

He said: “Horsehay Post Office will be closing on Saturday, June 5, at 12.30pm due to the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use. The shop is now under new management.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the closure of this branch as we know how important a Post Office is to the community.

"We are currently investigating the options available which will enable us to re-instate a Post Office service to the local community. In the interim alternative branches include Dawley Avenue and Alma Avenue.”

Councillor Jayne Greenaway who represents Horsehay and Lightmoor on Telford & Wrekin Council, said there was concern within the community at the prospect of the loss of the post office and the shop.

She said: "Obviously we have grave concerns about this because there is really nothing our side of town.

"The problem is for us it leaves us locally without a post office and a shop. For me you cannot have one without the other."

She added: "They are very much an important local service. It is a real concern for us. It came up at the parish council meeting last night and the residents are obviously concerned so we are going to try to do whatever we can to try and find another premises and we would certainly welcome any support the community would offer with that. We really can't afford to lose it."
