Telford & Wrekin Council have been left counting the cost after cancelling Saturday's event due to safety concerns over Storm Hannah.

Those that had travelled to take part in the event were left disappointed when they were told they would have to cancel.

But the council said wind conditions were too hazardous to continue.

Now it is hoped organisers can re-purpose some of its plans for other upcoming events.

Russell Griffin, of the council, said: "We took the decision to cancel the event on Saturday with heavy hearts, but there was no question of risking public safety.

"We were grateful to all of our suppliers and vendors for making the effort to get there, but it became apparent early on that the wind conditions were hazardous and going to get worse, and we could not continue.

"We are reviewing our plans from Saturday to see how we can divert some of the planned activities into other upcoming events and working with suppliers to determine the overall costs of the event."

The day would have included food stalls, St George and the Dragon, Chinese dancing, archery, ski slope, bee keeping, circus, dog show and camel racing, among other activities.

Although the overall event was cancelled, several parts of it went ahead as planned.

Southwater Library hosted an event with 17 authors and a wandering poet, as well as providing craft activities. The Veolia Scrap Dragon, his Hobby Horse companion and the Boom Bike Band also made some appearances at Southwater.

Paw Patrol characters also greeted visitors to the library and Southwater area.
