Campaigners say Lawley Village junction now too dangerous

A long-time campaigner has said it is time for a rethink over a "dangerous" accident black spot in Telford.

Gordon Tranter first started calling for change at Lawley Drive crossroads in 2014, when he had recorded more than 20 road accidents at the spot.

The 48-year-old said since then there has been another 38 crashes – and that it was only going to get worse as the area continues to be developed.

"Something needs doing," he said. "Before long it's going to be fatal.

"It's frustrating. How many more accidents are there going to be before something is done?"

Gordon, who lives in Lawley Village, said there were now 20 sets of traffic lights around the cross roads.

He said the way they were sequenced was also causing problems.

His comments come after a crash on Friday saw traffic come to a standstill.

Police were needed to direct motorists through the area after a two-car smash between a dark grey Skoda Octavia and a white Ford Transit.

One lane of the road was closed for a number of hours while it was cleared.

Police said one of the drivers had suffered a possible hand injury.

Gordon said it was only a matter of time before something worse happens.

"They are building thousands of homes – it is getting bigger and bigger.

"It's going to get worse. It has to be one of the worst accident black spots in Telford.

"It needs monitoring more, or there needs to be traffic light cameras there. "

Gordon said people sometimes run red lights, but that was because the sequence was potentially confusing to drivers.

"What happens is because there are so many lights it is not really clear which ones you should be looking at as a driver, so people are driving out on red and getting into crashes," he said.

The former roundabout at the site was replaced as part of the development works in Lawley.
