The horror film, set for the most part in an American mall, was shown at the shopping centre on Saturday night.

A full house packed into the square between Sports Direct and Next to watch the 1978 cult classic on a big screen as part of the Telford Film Festival. Staff dressed up to scare unsuspecting visitors, and fans got into the spirit of the evening as well with costumes of their own.

Psyche Hudson, Arts and Culture Manager for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “When Telford came into being in the late 60s, the primary focus was on thinking of ways to attract residents to one of the UK’s newest towns.

“Telford Centre was one such attraction, opened smack bang in the geographical centre of Telford in 1973 and still attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors today.

“This film choice and setting were ideal for the immersive screening of Dawn of the Dead on Saturday night. We had a full house complete with zombie hoards roaming the eerily empty halls of the shopping centre, mirroring the scenes on screen.

“Thanks to everyone who braved the event, we’ve been working in collaboration with Flatpack Films, Telford Centre and have also been supported by fellow festival partners Cineworld and Telford Steam Railway who provided the zombies to bring wider film genres to Telford and build a more thriving film community in the town.”

The film was shown as part of the Telford Film Festival.
