Traders and residents, in Muxton, say they are relieved that the work to lay “crucial” new underground drains at cost of £900,00 was carried out in part of Wellington Road for several months.

Severn Trent Water used a specialist underground drill to install new drain pipes on land between Wellington Road and School Road following years of complaints of about bad smells.

The company said it will also help to protect homes from flooding.

Manager, of Muxton Newsagents, Baraj Cheema said: "We are quite relieved that the road has finally re-opened. Trade is slowly getting back to normal.

"People in area are not sure about the benefits though. Our customers have been commenting that the smell is still there. We understand that the work had to be done and the workmen were very good while they were here.

"Things will pick up sooner or later."

Businesses in the street had seen up to a 50 per cent drop in trade as a result of a dip in passing trade because of the road closure.

Ward representative for Donnington and Muxton Councillor Liz Clare said: "The new drains have been a long time coming. However, we are watching and waiting for a big downpour to see if it has cured the problem.

"We have noted that work is also ongoing on the Wrekin Drive estate at Donnington as well opposite the Co-op store."

The problem with sewer smells in the community has been the source on ongoing complaints. Despite work at a nearby pumping station in recent years the problem has remained.

Work in Wellington Road started in the spring and saw buses diverted from Wellington Road, which was shut at its junction with the A4640 Donnington Wood Way and The Whitehouse Hotel, affecting passengers using stops at the Old Post Office and Breton Park.

In 2014 roads were severely flooded in several communities including Muxton, Wrockwardine Wood, Ketley Bank, Wellington and Bridgnorth.
