It is the fifth year that the venue has hosted the two-day event, with more than 2,000 people expected through the doors throughout the weekend.

Lee Grant, vice chairman of the Poultry Club of Great Britain, said the event is the club's flagship show, featuring the best of the best.

He said: "The birds that are out there are the best of their breeds and that is what we stand for at the Poultry Club of Great Britain.

"We are absolutely delighted with the show, it is our flagship event and it is wonderful to see so many fanciers from all over the UK and some of our friends from Europe coming to visit.

"We like to say that it is the most prestigious event in the calendar. What makes it particularly special is the coveted Isherwood trophy for the best in show. It is so valuable that you don't get to take it home if you win it. You get a painting of it instead!"

Mr Grant said the show also provides an opportunity not just for the committed breeders but people who want to find out more about the specialist breeds of bird.

He said: "We welcome anyone to the show. We have got more than 3,500 followers on Facebook and you have a lot of domestic keepers who have a couple of chickens in the back yard and it is great to see them here enjoying what we do, and in particular the rare and fancy breeds of chicken."

In total there were around 600 exhibitors at the show competing across 1,638 classes.
