Telford & Wrekin Council launched its own price comparison website switch.telford.gov.uk in a bid to save residents money, while generating some revenue for the council.

It has recorded almost 70 switches since its launch this spring, between gas and electricity, and says the average saving per customer is £236 per year while the most anyone has saved is £648 per year.

The council launched 'Switch Telford' in April, in partnership with Ofgem accredited UK Power. The search engine which powers the site determines the best supplier for each household and gives independent advice on the cheapest tariff.

Residents using this free service see in one place all the gas and electricity deals on the market in real time and can switch supplier quickly and easily. When making the switch, residents don’t even have to contact their old supplier or change any direct debits, as the new energy site will do this for them.

Councillor Lee Carter, cabinet member for finance, commercial services & economic development, said: "Switch Telford is already helping residents to make considerable savings on their energy bills, with savings of up to £650 per year possible. We want to encourage as many people as possible to try it our and see how much they can save.

“The partnership we have with UK Power and AgilityEco guarantees that people are provided with independent, trusted advice on tariffs available on market, that best suit their household needs.”
