Youngsters help raise more than £10,000 for Shropshire charity with 'Rudolph Relay'
Young fundraisers have touched the hearts of hospice workers after thousands of school children took part in a festive event to support the charity raising more than £10,000.
Primary schools, nurseries and clubs across the region joined the Severn Hospice Rudolph Relay in December, raising more than £10,000 to support people living with incurable illness and their families.
Thousands of children donned antlers and raced across playgrounds and sports fields, getting active.
Participating schools, nurseries and clubs were given the freedom to organise the event however they liked with some incorporating it into PE classes.
Others went all out, turning it into a full day of fun with competitions, dress-ups and more, cheered on by the hospice’s Rudolph mascot.
A special award was also up for grabs for the school, nursery or club that raised the most funds per child – with Allscott Meads Primary and Nursery School taking the top spot.
Kirsty Parkinson, the school’s headteacher, said: “The children, families and friends of Allscott Meads Primary School celebrated their incredible fundraising success today in our Celebration Assembly. The children received an ‘Outstanding Fundraiser’ award from Severn Hospice representative Nicky. In total, £1213.33 was raised, which will go to support people with life-limiting illnesses within our local community.
“The children were absolutely delighted to see the positive difference they can make, and we are so proud of our wonderful children and very generous community!”
The funds raised by schools and families will help support Severn Hospice’s free specialist care for local people at a time when they need it most.
Nicky Green, Senior Community Fundraiser at Severn Hospice, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to all the children, schools and families who joined us for our third Rudolph Relay.
“Seeing thousands of youngsters come together to support the hospice is always heartwarming, and it’s wonderful to see our event is becoming part of the local Christmas calendar.”
She added: “All of our care is free, but it isn’t without cost. Severn Hospice has to raise £2 for every £3 it spends, and the ongoing support of the community – including our youngest supporters – helps ensure we can continue to be there for families across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and North Powys.
