A 23-year-old man, believed to be a passenger in a delivery van, died at the scene in Berwick Avenue, following an attack at about 1.05pm on Monday.

Four men aged 22, 24, 24, and 26 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody.

Residents were finally allowed to return to their homes last night, and were let in and out as they pleased, escorted by officers.

Locals praised the Bird in Hand pub at Coton Hill, for giving them a place to stay until officers allowed them back in.

One resident who wished to remain anonymous praised the police for doing a very difficult job.

"Yes, it is their job, but they have shown myself and fellow neighbours kindness and support," they said.

Nobody else, including a milkman in his float, was allowed past the flimsy blue-and-white crime scene tape as a police van and a police tent remained at the top of Berwick Avenue.

A DPD delivery van which had been parked at the side of the road, opposite to where the crime scene tent was this morning, had been taken away from the scene. DPD has been approached for comment.

Otherwise it was business as usual for residents who walked by on their way to work, or taking children to school. Many did not want to speak, one woman saying: "I'm sure there's much speculation already."
