A bid to install safe standing at Shrewsbury Town Football Club could be a "breakthrough moment" for the sport according to the company running the crowdfunding campaign.

Last month it was announced that the club's supporters' parliament was embarking on a bid to raise £75,000 to pay for a safe standing section at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.

The crowdfunding campaign, which will launch on Wednesday August 2nd, is being run by Tifosy, and its co-founder James Pollock said he is confident the total will be raised.

Any amount raised over the target will go to the Football Supporters Federation to support similar projects at other clubs.

Mr Pollock said: "This could be a breakthrough moment because if it is proven to work safely and in the way it is supposed to with Shrewsbury Town that should accelerate debate in government and repeal of these rules could happen sooner rather than later to allow other clubs to do similar."

Current rules mean that any club which has spent three seasons in the top two divisions of English football must have an all-seater stadium.

Mr Pollock said he hoped the fund would pass its total and generate more for other similar plans.

He said: "Ultimately as long as we raise the money to do the safe standing we will be happy but hopefully it will go further and create a fund other clubs can dip into."
