And with Market Hall traders supplying shoppers with tasty treats while they visited the new-look Severn Hospice shop in Mardol and Town Crier Martin Wood lending his vocal support, it was a real celebration of all things ‘community’.

Shop manager Elizabeth Andrews said: “Last year, the hospice helped more than 360 people within five miles of the shop so our community connection is very strong.

“We had a fabulous reopening day thanks to everyone who came to visit and are so grateful for the way in which residents responded to our appeal for help in restocking our shelves. It is only through the generosity of residents that we are able to local families who need it.”

Severn Hospice cares for people and their families living with an incurable illness across Shropshire and Mid Wales and each year needs to raise more than £7 million to fund its work.

The makeover at Mardol will provide shoppers with more sales space and a nicer place to browse.

Kate Gittins, facilities manager at Shrewsbury Market Hall, said: “We know how important community is to Shrewsbury and when we got the call to support a neighbour with their reopening our traders were delighted to lend their support by providing delicious cakes and canapes. I’d like to thank Barkworths Seafoods, Raven Books, Black Box and Charika Creations for giving their support.”
