Shrewsbury underpass gets a makeover
Clean up teams will be working to improve a popular Shrewsbury underpass which has been subject to anti social behaviour and vandalism.
Recent improvements to the Crowmere Road underpass in Monkmoor have been hailed as a success, following a recent visit by Team Shrewsbury.
But the work is still on going to improve the situation at the underpass which is a popular walkway to the town centre.
Officers from Shropshire Council’s streetscene, public protection and community enablement teams, along with members of West Mercia Police’s Safer Neighbourhoods Team and local councillors, all members of Team Shrewsbury, visited the underpass last week to find it very clean, with only a few minor issues that will be picked up by the council’s ongoing routine maintenance programme.
Workers have been detailed to cut back vegetation, remove litter, replace dog fouling signs and remove graffiti.
A clean-up and repaint of the underpass was carried out last year by students from Shrewsbury College, supported by the council, and the lighting illuminating the underpass improved. It was part of an action plan for improvement, drawn up following a number of complaints from local residents about anti-social behaviour in the area.
Tim Sneddon, Shropshire Council’s operations manager, said: “It’s great to see that the improvements have made a big difference, increasing safety and reducing anti-social behaviour in the area.
“Our site visit highlighted just a few ongoing improvements, plus continued patrols which we’ll focus on over the next few weeks and months.”
Last month, local resident Tom Stokes said he had been forced to carry out litter picks in the area of the underpass up to three times a week.
The 32-year-old found condoms and used syringes in the underpass and had collected numerous items of rubbish including broken glass, cans and bottles.
