Church's prayers are answered
Shrewsbury Abbey is set to benefit from a £10,000 grant to help fund urgent stonework repairs and to upgrade kitchen facilities.
The Abbey is a medieval Grade I listed scheduled monument which is on the Historic England Heritage at Risk register.
But the National Churches Trust Repair Grant will allow urgent work to be carried out on the exterior of the building – parts of which are cordoned off to prevent masonry falling on passers-by.
The Abbey is one of 41 churches and chapels in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to benefit from a £247,205 grants package from the National Churches Trust, the UK church repair and support charity.
Broadcaster and Journalist Huw Edwards, vice-president of the National Churches Trust said: “I'm delighted that the future of Shrewsbury Abbey is being secured by a National Churches Trust grant to fund urgent repairs.
“In good repair and with more use by local people and visitors, the magnificent building of Shrewsbury Abbey will continue to play a vital role in the life and well-being of the town for many, many years to come.”
