Four years ago, before the last local elections, Oswestry Town Council held an open evening at the Guildhall for those interested in becoming a councillor.

The pandemic has made that impossible this year but the council is going on line to give potential new councillors an insight into its work.

The virtual information session for those who might be interested in standing for election at the next meeting will be held on February 22 between 7pm and 8pm.

It will be led by the Mayor, Councillor Duncan Kerr, town clerk, Arren Roberts and the council's most recently elected councillor, Les Maguire.

Those who want to get involved should use the following link to access the session https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89398947601.

Councillor Kerr said that the aim of the session was to help potential candidates understand more about the work of the Town Council, find out a little bit about the election process, find out more about the important role that elected members play in their communities and understand what it means to be a new councillor. There would also be an opportunity to ask questions, he said.

"The work of town and parish Councils falls into three main categories, the delivery of services, improving quality of life for residents and giving communities a democratic voice.

"Councillors are community leaders and represent the interests of the communities they serve."
