Councillor Sandy Best it putting her own, individual touch on the event at the Wynnstay Hotel on Saturday by making home-made jam for the occasion, served in individual pots.

The event will get underway at 3pm with prosecco, a raffle and music.

Tickets, available from RJ Christians in Bailey Street and Rowanthorn in Old Chapel Court, cost £25 with profits going to the Lingen Davies Cancer Appeal and Shropshire Young Carers.

Councillor Best has been making her home made jams and chutneys all year to boost the mayoral appeal with the ordinary sized jars available for a minimum donation of £1.50 at the Guildhall.

Her concoctions, which fall under the title, “Sandy’s Scrumptious Goodies". include not only the marmalades and strawberry jams that many people make but more unusual preserves, from apricot and gooseberry jam to rhubarb and orange chutney. The mayor has already raised more than £1,000 from her sweet treats.

As well as buying the ingredients she is also getting donations of fruit and vegetables from friends and neighbours. She said: “I only make small batches at a time and what I have available will be dependent on what I have in season. I am very grateful to those who have been giving me produce from their gardens. When I became deputy mayor I started to think about ways in which I could raise funds for charity. I have always liked baking and I wanted to do something that would involve me giving my time to the fundraising.”
