8,000 homes lose power in lightning strike near Market Drayton

Nearly 8,000 buildings lost power briefly after a suspected lightning strike near Market Drayton.

The loss lasted about two minutes, after a circuit tripped on Saturday night.

Jo Marlow of Western Power Distribution said: "We can confirm that at 9.04pm on Saturday a 33,000-volt circuit tripped.

"For two minutes there were 7,938 customers without power in Market Drayton.

"The circuit automatically resets itself so that is what happened after a short period.

"The line has since been inspected and no damage was found.

"What we suspect is a lightning strike."

Others reported losing power temporarily in nearby Norton-in-Hales, Moreton Say, Cheswardine, Loggerheads, Hodnet, and Eccleshall, and the emergency services were told of blue or green lights in the skies over Market Drayton.
