Skate park soon to be finished in Market Drayton

A town's long-awaited skate park could be finished next week, with an opening date expected soon.

In the mean time, Market Drayton Town Council is asking people to stay out of the fenced site as finishing touches are made.

Julie Jones, town clerk, said she had heard reports some users were getting in to the site ahead of schedule.

She said: "We are aware of people getting in to the site, we are trying to keep them out as best we can.

"They can't do any damage or anything but it is not ideal. It is all fenced off and there is security down there 24/7.

"The actual skate park is all finished off now except for the landscaping."

The skate park has been on the cards for a number of years in the town and was last year awarded £75,000 from Sports England.

A further £80,000 was pledged towards the scheme by the town council to revamp its 15-year-old facility.

The old skate park, which is close to the swimming pool, has been replaced with a larger site as part of the development.

And with the finishing works underway, Mrs Jones said it could be opened soon.

She said: "Depending on the weather, it should we think be finished some time next week.

"This doesn't mean we are having an opening straight away of course, it is up to the council and councillors haven't decided yet."

The council has not yet decided whether there will be a "soft" and "official" opening – the former allowing people to use the facility before a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony.

She added: "The site isn't open yet, and we would ask people to stay off the park until it is.

"As soon as we can, we will make a decision and open it when it is finished."

Consultation over the plans had seen residents judge a number of different styles of skate park and ramps.

According to the council's website, it had been hoped to be finished some time in February this year.

Meanwhile, Whitchurch could soon see its own skate park built in the town after 10 years of campaigning.

Earlier this month it was revealed funding has now come in for the park, which will cost about £70,000. There are hopes the site will be started in summer and take about six to eight weeks to build.

Shropshire Council said funding has now been secured from the council, Whitchurch Town Council, Next Generation Youth, and Twemlows solar farm.
