The cash-strapped heritage line launched the survival fund in April, as it needs to generate £1.5 million to get it through its 'seasonal lean periods'.

The appeal has now passed £427,000 including Gift Aid, but managing director of the railway, Gus Dunster, says more is needed and the SVR is exploring other ways of raising money to boost the survival fund.

Writing in the railway's monthly newsletter, Branch Lines, Mr Dunster said: "We have been hugely heartened by the thousands of donations that have been made to our appeal launched in April this year, and we’re extremely grateful to everyone who has donated.

"As well as these generous donations from individuals, SVR (Holdings) Plc has been raising funds towards the Survival Fund through a number of different methods."
