History exhibition has a target audience
A Shropshire village's local history exhibition is aiming to highlight the achievements of a resident who reached the top in the sport of clay pigeon shooting.
Claverley History Exhibition from July 8 to 11 is taking the theme of People, Places, and Events, and as part of it will tell the story of Brian Bradley.
"Brian's story fits in nicely with the theme," said John Burns of the village history group.
"During the 1970s and 1980s Brian was one of the UK's most successful clay pigeon marksmen, winning many major championships including the British Open in 1986 and four English Opens between 1973 and 1986.
"During that same period he also amassed an amazing 82 major titles at regional and county levels.
"As a young man he tried a number of sports and when some friends set up a clay pigeon trap and invited him to 'have a go' he thought 'why not?' His first attempt rendered four hits out of the first 25. Undaunted, he persevered and quickly acquired a great passion and skill for the sport, so much so that before long his Sundays were spent travelling to UK-wide destinations for competitions.
"He still regularly attends the Bridgnorth and District Gun Club events and is currently the club treasurer. He confesses that while he tends to do more marking and scoring than shooting these days he is still a great fan of the sport. He continues to follow his main occupation of greengrocer on local market days."
The exhibition at the village hall takes place during the same weekend as Claverley Flower Festival held in Claverley Church.
