Shropshire club in marathon team effort
Members of Shropshire’s Wise and Well club will be celebrating the 40th London Marathon on Sunday by completing the 26.2 miles as a team.
In response to the Covid-19 lockdown, Shropshire Rural Communities Charity started the online club for Shropshire people aged over 65, to encourage them to stay fit, healthy and engaged.
As well as receiving a regular email-newsletter, club members also attend “events” on Zoom.
Susie Hancock for the charity said: “To celebrate the 40th London Marathon, on Sunday (4th October), we are holding a Wise & Well Club Virtual Walking Marathon.
"Many 65 – 95 year olds find 26.2 miles a daunting challenge. As a team, however, we hope to each walk as far as we can, to achieve a combined 26.2 miles.
"In London Marathon style, Wise & Well Club members who have volunteered to take part have been sent numbers and sponsorship forms.
"We are raising money for a range of charities, including Shropshire Rural Communities Charity, Blind Veterans, British Heart Foundation and Coeliac UK.”
Sponsorship from members of the public would be most welcome. To donate to Shropshire RCC, click the donate button at shropshire-rcc.org.uk
Anyone in Shropshire aged at least 65 who might like to join the Wise & Well Club should contact Susie.Hancock@shropshire-rcc.org.uk for more information.
Up and coming online events include a talk and film on Singing for Lung Health next week, also via Zoom.
Members contribute suggestions of online exercise instructors, items for future newsletters and photos to liven up the presentation.
