Don’t stockpile for Brexit, say Shropshire doctors

Health experts in Shropshire advised people not to stockpile medicine ahead of the possibility of Britain leaving the European Union with no deal.

Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has been preparing for the scheduled departure at the end of this month, and last year pharmacies were ordered to gather extra reserves.

But the CCGs chair Dr Julian Povey said he is confident Shropshire residents will not have to begin stockpiling.

He said: "We are strongly advising residents not to stockpile medicines, there is no need for that.

"The national plans for no deal are sufficient.

"We would advise people to take the usual preparations with their medicines."

He said that people needing "life-saving" medicines should always make sure they have enough to last.

In September, Dr Povey issued a note to the CCG governors saying that the Government had told pharmaceutical companies to ensure an additional six weeks stock of medicines as well as their usual supply.

But hospitals, GPs and pharmacies were told they do not need to stockpile medicines beyond usual levels, and the note said that any over-ordering of medicine would be investigated.

The CCGs board heard a verbal report at a meeting yesterday on the group's preparations for leaving the EU from Sam Tilley, director of corporate affairs.
