Maternity consultation in Bridgnorth today

Mothers who have used maternity services in Bridgnorth are being urged to give feedback on their experiences today.

A drop-in afternoon is being held today at Bridgnorth Hospital's midwife-led unit, between 1.30pm and 5pm, as part of a review that will decide the fate of the more rural maternity units in Shropshire, currently being carried out by Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Groups. Similar sessions will be held in Ludlow on Thursday and in Oswestry on Friday.

The review is ongoing, but the fate of the midwife-led units is currently contentious as units in Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Oswestry are closed for at least three weeks, possibly as many as six, due to staffing and sickness issues that have dogged the service since the end of last year.

A march in support of maternity services took place in Oswestry this weekend.

The drop in sessions are being carried out by outside body ELC.

A spokesman for ELC said: "Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin CCGs are currently undertaking a review of midwife led units.

"You are the experts. We want to find out from people in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin – who have used the service in the last 2.5 years, and the staff who deliver the services – what needs to happen so that maternity services are safe and both staff and family have a great experience of birth and transition well to family life?

"We will be asking about your experiences, what is working well and what we need to change and improve so that we have the best possible outcomes for everyone."

There will also be an online survey launched in August and public events in September.
