Top efforts have seen county win Beaufort Shield
What a difference a few days of sunshine make in the spring. It gives a positive feeling of well being to man and animal, writes Christine Downes, county chairman of Shropshire RABI.
"Magic Day" has been reached where the grass is growing faster than the stock can eat it. Sugar levels are correct in the grass for silage making, to ensure plenty of winter fodder for livestock. The shearing gangs are preparing their equipment, to start the season. If you have the chance, visit the Shropshire Show on May 28 to watch the skills of youngsters shearing.
In Shropshire we are justly proud of the Young Farmers Clubs, with their excellent public speaking, stock judging, dancing and fundraising prowess. At the recent Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution annual meeting in Oxford, the YFC Cup was awarded to Shropshire for all their support to RABI, including a donation of £7,000.
An enthusiastic organisation, it nationally raised more than £1 million for a number of charities. Perhaps they will be interested in The Stricken Vessel, a charity beer and cider festival on June 18, raising funds for RABI and Greenfields Africa, at Lower Eyton Farm, Alberbury, from 2pm to midnight. Tickets, £6, are available from Chris on 07886 654839. Our annual Saturday market in The Square, Shrewsbury, is a great way to talk to shoppers explaining the work of RABI. Daisy the "model" cow, on loan from Stapeley Vets, and the chance to sit in a large tractor are a huge attraction.
In Shropshire last year £94,320 was spent on beneficiaries, supporting and caring in complete confidence those going through tough times. The helpline is 0808 281 9490.
The Shropshire committee was honoured to receive The Beaufort Shield at the annual meeting for the county raising the most money through the year. A wonderful and humbling £58,141 was raised. Thank you to all those who give so generously, attending events and "putting the fun into fundraising".
We were delighted that Heulwen Charles was presented with a regional award in a special recognition of all the time she gives to RABI, such as zip wiring in Wales, making hundreds of mince pies. It was a great day for Shropshire.
We are looking forward to the National Farmers Union county chairman's lunch on June 26 at Ludlow Race Club with delicious food followed by a promise auction. For tickets call Becky Davies on 07876 492839 or email rm.west-midlands@rabi.org.uk
