Return of Burwarton Show is undoubtedly a red letter day for the county

Having been voted the top one-day agricultural show in the country in 2011, it was devastating for last year's Burwarton Show to be cancelled due to the atrocious weather, writes show chairman Richard Yates.

This "bereavement" has galvanised the main committee into producing an even better spectacle for this year's show, which is on August 1.

I am constantly reminded of how so many people are looking forward to Burwarton, which is undoubtedly one of the county's red letter days of the year. As usual, trade stand space was sold out by Easter with a large waiting list. Just about every make of tractor will be on show as the farm machinery continues to expand; priority is always given to rural involvement throughout the show, which is one of the reasons for its popularity.

Burwarton has a tradition of being a quality country show held mid-week, which attracts both urban and rural visitors alike. It is evident on the day that the animals are of great interest to the public. The pig classes which were such an attraction last time add an extra dimension to our beautiful parkland location on the Boyne estate at Cleobury North.

For the first time in many years a sheep shearing competition returns to Burwarton, with lambs provided by the host farmer, David Green. The sheep section is second to none with around 800 entries expected, ranging from the expensive pampered pedigrees to the traditional rare breeds all vying for the supreme interbreed title.

My father and grandfather regularly exhibited their British Friesian cattle at Burwarton, but we, like so many these days, have been affected by the spread of bovine TB and are currently "shut down".

Exhibiting cattle at agricultural shows involves much aggravation and I am extremely grateful to those who go the extra mile to enrich our showground, whether it be showing dainty Dexters or languid Longhorns.

Any inquiries regarding entries should be directed to show manager Glenys Allen on (01746) 787535.

The main ring programme is packed with entertainment, with the outstanding Kangaroo Kids on their quad bikes having star billing.

We also have a full itinerary of entertainment on the Village Green and the blossoming countryside arena continues to attract much interest.

All in all, an outstanding day out in an unspoilt part of rural south Shropshire.
