Shrewsbury Colleges Group sets records
It teaches more students than any other school or college in the county and the principal of Shrewsbury Colleges Group today hailed the efforts of his staff after the publication of the government league tables.
James Staniforth, principal and chief executive of Shrewsbury Colleges Group (SCG), which had 869 students entering A-level exams in 2017, said: “We were delighted with our A-level results this summer, with a record number of students securing places at university as a result of the grades they achieved.
“SCG students were nine per cent more likely than the national average to secure a university place.”
The latest government figures showed that the average grade for pupils at the college in an A-level was C. Mr Staniforth added: “SCG was the only school or college in the county and the only college in the country to enter all students on two-year A-levels. Other schools and colleges entered students for one year AS courses in at least some subjects. Students then dropped subjects at the end of the first year and only carried on their best subjects to the full A-level.
“Our results are not therefore directly comparable with other schools and colleges or our results in previous years. Other schools and colleges will now have to catch up as two-year linear A-levels become the norm.
“What we know is that the quality of our teaching is going from strength to strength, with a record 16 students winning Oxbridge places.”
