Journalism 'the best career in the world' says Glyndwr University lecturer
Journalism is still "the best career in the world" according to a university lecturer speaking about the subject as part of Local Newspaper Week 2016.
Jon Simcock, former deputy editor of the Star, who lectures at Wrexham's Glyndwr University, said: "One day you can be interviewing the Prime Minister, the next you might be covering your local football team. You'll get to find out what's going on before anyone else, talk to people you never thought you would meet and work at the cutting edge of digital technology. It's the best career in the world.
"Because the way the internet has changed all our lives, your reports will be read, listened to or seen by more people than ever before."
The university has run a one-year journalism course in partnership with local media groups, including the Star, for eight years.
Fellow lecturer Janet Jones, also a former Star journalist, said: "Students spend two days a week in class and two in newsrooms, so they get a comprehensive picture of both the practical and theoretical sides of journalism.
"And because they spend so much time on placement they have a great opportunity to put themselves in the shop window when it comes to finding work."
