A leader at the University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) has thanked people for their ideas and enthusiasm after the end of the autumn 2015 term.

The term saw the opening of the Guildhall, the learning and research base in Frankwell Quay, and the new student accommodation at Mardol House in the town centre.

The first undergraduates were welcomed, the Student Council was elected and the first personal development week happened.

Russ Millhouse, head of secretariat and student support said: "We are extremely grateful to everyone who has given up their time to play a part in the development of University Centre Shrewsbury, including residents, councillors and businesses.

"The response and input at community liaison meetings, including the most recent in November, local joint committees, community drop-in sessions at Guildhall, Team Shrewsbury meetings, and public events has been fantastic."

Mr Millhouse added: "And of course, the students themselves have been terrific ambassadors.

"They have settled into Shrewsbury life extremely well, being given a big welcome to the town.

"Whether volunteering for organisations like Fairtrade, working part-time in local businesses, on placement with local organisations, fundraising for charity, or just using local services and visiting places in the area, they are becoming valued members of the community.

"The students are also leaving a legacy at Guildhall by working on projects to create interesting and unique spaces for learning and recreation in the building and courtyard, giving the learning and research centre their own stamp.

"Growing up in Shropshire, I was delighted to be involved in UCS and I've been extremely proud to see the plans become reality.

"I'm looking forward to continuing to discuss our plans with the community in the coming terms and years."
