Telford primary school needs to improve, say inspectors
A Telford primary school is in need of improvement, the government's education watchdog has said.
Windmill Primary School was rated as good by Ofsted inspectors in July last year. But, following a visit last month, the school has dropped a level to "requires improvement", despite being rated good in the categories for quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management.
In a report after the visit to the school in Beaconsfield, Brookside, inspectors said: "In 2013, pupils in Key Stage Two did not achieve as well as they could. Standards in reading and mathematics were not as high as in previous years.
"Although improved, achievement from the beginning of Key Stage two is not yet reflecting improvement fully due to a legacy of weak teaching in the past.
"More able pupils did not achieve as well as they should due to work not being demanding enough. Pupils are not always clear about how to improve their work because marking does not show them."
However, they said that pupils at the school showed good attitudes and behaviour in the school.
The report said: "Children get a good start in the Nursery and Reception, where they achieve well in all areas of learning. Achievement through key stage one is consistently good.
"Pupils behave well in lessons and around the school."
Headteacher Mark Gibbons accepted the judgements and was pleased with the overall report.
He said: "We were disappointed with some of our key stage two results in 2013, but have bounced back and Ofsted has agreed current progress and attainment statistics are good."
