Excellent report 'should save Mid Wales school from axe'

Shutting a closure-threatened Mid Wales primary school would "beggar belief" after it was given an "excellent" inspection report, it was claimed today.

Powys County Council will decide whether to close Llandinam Primary School, near Llanidloes, on October 1 after it was given a temporary stay of execution earlier this year.

The council's cabinet decided to wait for Welsh schools' inspection body Estyn to publish a report on standards at Llandinam before making the decision.

Now the report, which describes the school as "good" and claims it has prospects of improving, has been hailed the final nail in the coffin of the closure plans.

Jean Carter, chairman of governors, said: "We have been waiting for this report and now it would beggar belief if the council went and closed the school.

"We are so pleased it shows what an excellent school this is. We are confident we can improve and make sure the next report in six years time will be even better."

In May, cabinet members voted to wait for the results of the report before making a decision on the school's future.

During May's meeting, Councillor Myfanwy Alexander, cabinet member for schools, said: "As the school is currently under inspection, we feel until that information is available, making a decision would be premature.

"We have the desire to make the right decision for learners in the area."

Mrs Carter added: "We were grateful then and are now confident we have the report we needed to keep the school open. It must mean that the council's cabinet will now find it very hard to close us down and the board or governors will work as hard as possible to keep the school improving."
