Shrewsbury High School tops table for GCSE results in Shropshire
A girls' school in Shrewsbury is celebrating after being ranked as the top independent school in Shropshire for its GCSE results.
Shrewsbury High School has been named in first place in the county in terms of the average points score achieved by pupils after new data was published by the Independent Schools Council.
Headteacher Michael Getty said today he was 'absolutely delighted' with the findings.
The school's pupils had an average points score of 510.16, ahead of second-placed Concord College on 503.89 and Moreton Hall in third position, which recorded an average points score of 494.67.
Bedstone College was fourth in the county, Adcote School for Girls was fifth and Oswestry School was sixth. But not all of Shropshire's independent schools had their results published in the table. Shrewsbury School was not included.
Mr Getty said: "We are absolutely delighted with these outstanding GCSE results which clearly demonstrate how Shrewsbury High School is leading in girls' education in Shropshire.
"The ISC points league table indicates how well each individual student is taken to their all-round academic potential, and we are very proud to see that Shrewsbury High School girls have excelled in this way."
Neil Hawkins, principal of Concord College, also welcomed the results, which came a week after his school was named second in the country for its A-level results.
"We are particularly pleased that our Shropshire day students have performed so well: in particular Philip Hawkins and Abbi Ford, who both achieved 10A* grades from the 10 GCSEs they sat," he said.
A spokesman for Shrewsbury School said it had chosen not to publish its results.
"Along with many other top schools in the UK, Shrewsbury School no longer includes its results in the national league tables, as they believe that the value of the league tables has been undermined by the growth in range and complexity of qualifications in recent years," she said.
"However, in 2012, 44 per cent of Shrewsbury School's GCSE grades were at A*, and 73 per cent were either A* or A."
