Joseph Huxley, of no fixed abode, had been in a relationship with the woman for five years when he attacked her on March 15 last year, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard on Friday.

Ms Rosemary Proctor, prosecuting, said the 24-year-old defendant, who had admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm on the day his trial was due to start last month, had visited his former partner's address on the day of attack, after consuming alcohol and while high on "cocaine, ketamine and monkey dust".

Ms Proctor told the court that Huxley took money from the woman and began calling her names, "calling her a cheat" before a "scuffle" broke out.
