One in hospital after Shrewsbury town centre assault

A person was taken to hospital and a man arrested on suspicion of assault in a town centre today.

Police descended on the Darwin Shopping Centre in Shrewsbury to deal with a disturbance. A man was arrested and a casualty taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment.

Three marked police cars, an unmarked 4x4 and a police van were parked outside the Darwin Shopping Centre at the top of Pride Hill in Shrewsbury.

Onlookers were gathered outside the centre trying to see what was going on at around 1.30pm.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: "Officers were called to the Darwin Shopping Centre on Pride Hill in Shrewsbury shortly after 1pm today where they arrested a male on suspicion of assault.

"The victim has been taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment. The arrested man is helping police with enquiries and investigations are ongoing."
