UP to £1 million is being made available to fund and improve CCTV systems across the county.

Systems upgraded or set up with the funding would see footage from across the region viewed remotely from a control room.

The money has been put aside by West Mercia police and crime commissioner John Campion, who said improved quality of images would help the police catch more criminals, and would lead to people feeling safer.

CCTV is not directly run by the police and the organisations which look after the systems, such as councils, will be able to apply through the Community Safety Partnership, for a slice of the funding.

Companies which can perform the work are invited to come forward.

Mr Campion said: “I committed to investing £1m in CCTV in West Mercia because I recognise it is an extremely valuable resource. Setting that money aside ensures councils and other community organisations have the resources to improve cameras and systems.

“In turn, that can make people feel safer and ensures better quality of images to assist the police.”

The job will include designing and installing CCTV cameras that can send images back to a control room, as well as the upgrading of existing cameras.

It will also include decommissioning of CCTV cameras already in place, and the disposal of any hardware or equipment.

The price of the contract includes the maintenance of the system, as well as any potential future expansion and system flexibility if needed during the contract term.

The tender description reads: “A consolidation project to provide connectivity for existing West Mercia Police on-street CCTV cameras to enable them to send images back to the control room, the upgrade of recording and control systems at each site, and associated works to supply and fit out the CCTV control room.

“Also the design, supply, installation, commissioning for new equipment on some buildings, along with maintenance for the whole system.”
