Family demanding action after 'sickening' attack on pensioner

The family of a woman who was beaten in her own home are still demanding answers five months on and have been left questioning if the case will ever be solved.

It was on June 19 when Blanche Rowlands, 88, was beaten by burglars and locked in the bedroom at her home in Dolfor Road, Newtown.

Jewellery was stolen and the victim was left with serious injuries, for which she is still receiving hospital treatment.

Her family’s calls for action have done little to assist the police investigation and five months on they are still awaiting answers.

Her nephew Mervyn Lloyd-Jones said: “We are a bit fed up to the back teeth that we are five months down the line and nothing has happened.

“They say the first 48 hours of the investigation are crucial but we are months down the line and there are still people on bail and no developments. It is just deeply frustrating because we want someone to face charges on this, and nothing seems to be happening. Our message to the police is just another plea for something to happen.”

Following the attack the family described it as “sickening” and her injuries had left her “black and blue”.

Mr Lloyd-Jones said the attack had left his aunt with more than just physical scars.

He said: “She is still receiving hospital treatment, but it has left her with mental injuries too.

“When someone leaves the room now she is scared and on edge, it is not nice at all.”

Three men were arrested in connection with the incident, with one man released in July under investigation and two more bailed.

On September 20 they both answered to bail and were released under investigation.

And after recent assaults around the town, Mr Lloyd-Jones has questioned what Dyfed-Powys Police are doing to address the problems.

He said: “It could happen again, to someone’s grandmother or mother.

“There have been other attacks recently in Newtown, so it begs the question what are the police actually doing?”

Dyfed-Powys Police were not available for comment.
