Police said the theft happened at about 11.30am on Saturday.

While standing outside a hardware shop in Frogmore Street, the elderly man was approached by a male holding a £20 note and asking for change.

The pensioner checked his wallet but could not find sufficient cash to change the note.

He was then asked the way to the nearest dental surgery.

Later he found that £50 worth of notes had gone from the wallet.

The suspected offender was a smartly dressed, foreign national in a navy blue suit, probably about 30, of average height and medium build and with dark hair.
